FLL Junior Program Kicked Off

FIRST® LEGO® League Junior is a hands-on program designed to capture young children’s curiosity and direct it toward discovering how science and technology impact the world around them. This program features a real-world challenge, to be explored through research, critical thinking and imagination.

This years theme is Honey Bees and their habitat. Students need to research about Honey Bees, their habitat, their role in pollination and the challenges they face.

Students need to build a LEGO model and a poster that shows off what they learned about this topic. This model and poster is the final deliverable that we will be taking to the Expo at Macquarie University representing Girraween Public School.

What did we do in Week 1?

On Tuesday, students were briefed about the program and allocated to teams. They were asked to come up with team names related to the theme. Some of the team names they come up with include Bee a Genius, Honey Factory and Bee Busters! We will be finalising the team names in the next workshop. Students were then asked to build and program a robot that can walk.

On Wednesday, we had a real treat! We had invited an Apiculturist who has been keeping Bees for almost 50 years to talk to students about the Bees, their lifecycle, habitat and their role in pollination. Students got the opportunity to ask questions and try on the protective equipment and tools. Most Tuesday students were able to make it to the session and the session is recorded for anyone who missed it or late registrants.
