LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 Programs

September 8, 2017

Are you looking to challenge your child through meaningful play? Robotics is fun and deeply engaging activity that is more than just building a robot or bringing it to life through coding. Robotics helps develop teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, critical thinking and project management skills. It sparks a sense of belonging, responsibility, achievement, self-identity, and confidence that can last a lifetime.

Introducing our new robotics program based on LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3. LEGO® Mindstroms® EV3 is the latest and the most advanced LEGO® Robotics kit. It is widely used as the preferred kit by all major robotics competitions around the world including FIRST® LEGO® League and Robocup in Australia.

Program outline

Introduction to LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3

Robotics

LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3

  • This program introduces students to the EV3 kit and the software. The EV3 kit contains 2 large motors, 1 medium motor, touch sensor, color sensor and IR sensor. Students will learn about all the different motors, sensors, cables and the programmable EV3 brick. Each week we will work on a fun challenge that introduces students to one of these features.
  • Example activities include building a robot that can use sensors to detect remote objects, turn its direction and carry objects with a robotic arm.
  • By the end of the program, students will be able to build and program models/robots. This program is suitable for beginners aged 8 and above. An assessment will be conducted at the end of the program to determine whether the student is ready to progress to the Advanced LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 program.

FAQs

LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 Programs – All Schools

  1. There are two programs available for my child – what is the difference and which one shall we join?
    • FLL Jr. program is targetted to primary school students aged 6-10 years old and is based on solving a real world problem to be explored through research and team work. No prior robotics or coding experience is required.
    • Introduction to LEGO® MIndstorms® EV3 programs are recommended for ages 8+ and is the pathway to participate in the robotics competitions. Competitions such as FIRST® LEGO® League and Robocup is based on LEGO® MIndstorms® EV3 or similar robotics kit and requires working knowledge of the robotics kit.
    • We recommend FLL Jr. for all students under the age of 8 where they have had no prior coding or robotics experience. It’s a great way to introduce them to the FIRST® LEGO® League programs. Anyone over 8 should consider joining the LEGO® MIndstorms® EV3 programs.
  2. How many students participate in a workshop/team?
    • The EV3 workshops are limited to only 6-8 students.
  3. Will each student get their own kit?
    • One kit will be shared by two students.
  4. Is this program open to any school students?
    • Yes, you do not need to be a student of Girraween or Parramatta East.
  5. Are there additional costs for participating in the robotics competitions?
    • Yes, there will be additional charges to participate in the robotics competitions. The exact amount depends on the competition and how many members we have in the team.
  6. I am interested but the workshop times do not suit us.
    • Just send us a note and we can discuss the options.
